Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome: Intercepting Patients with OSAS and Effectiveness of Dental Treatment
Abstract
Sleep disorders are remarkably relevant in dentistry, in particular with regard to bruxism and obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.
Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) and habitual chronic snoring – as its clinically relevant symptom and often as the initial phase of a disease that tends to worsen over time –are a medical and social problem of increasing importance in the medical and scientific community. OSAS per se is a risk factor for cardio- and cerebro-vascular diseases and arterial hypertension and as such must be diagnosed and possibly treated in the most appropriate way for each individual patient.
Among the useful therapeutic approaches, in recent years mandibular advancement devices (MAD) have progressively gained importance as a suitable tool to treat patients with mild or moderate OSAS, or who do not tolerate night-time mechanical ventilation (like CPAP), or who prefer a non-invasive treatment to simply eliminate snoring.
